Have you ever finished a meal and realized you barely tasted it? I know I have—sometimes breakfast disappears while I’m unloading the dishwasher! This happens because we’re distracted, rushing, or simply not paying attention. That’s where mindful eating comes in.


What Is Mindful Eating?

Mindful eating is simply being present while you eat. It’s about slowing down, noticing your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, and engaging all your senses with your meal. This practice not only supports healthy eating habits but also contributes to stress relief and improved mental wellbeing.

Instead of treating meals as just fuel, mindful eating turns them into a grounding practice, bringing you into just this moment—one that can help us feel more satisfied and less likely to overeat. And perhaps, just perhaps…you might enjoy the experience.

How to Practice Mindful Eating

Here are a few simple steps to bring mindfulness to your next meal:

·         Remove distractions: Turn off the TV, put your phone away, and avoid multitasking.

·         Engage your senses: Notice the colors and textures on your plate. Listen for crunches, inhale the aromas, and savor each flavor as it hits your tongue.

·         Chew slowly: Pay attention to how the food feels in your mouth and give yourself time to enjoy it fully.

·         Communicate:  If you are eating with family, friends or both or even if you are alone (it’s okay to talk to yourself, it’s a sign of intelligence…at least that is what my husband tells me, yes he talks to himself all the time) tell them what you taste, how it feels.  Ask them how they like it, how it feels to them.  Maybe you can help someone else begin a mindful eating practice. Win = Win

·         Listen to your body: Slowing down makes it easier to recognize when you’re satisfied—before you reach the “too full” point. It also gives your digestive system time to digest properly

By doing this, you naturally eat less, enjoy more, and nourish both your body and mind.

Mindful eating isn’t just about weight management—it’s a holistic mindful practice that can reduce stress and foster a deeper connection with yourself. When you dedicate time to be present at the table, you carry that awareness into other areas of life. The result? Greater balance, calm, and joy.
